is Mitt Romney a knitter?

Do you think Mitt Romney likes to knit or spin? With a name like that, he should—mitts seem to be the hot new hand-knits, while Romney wool seems to be a favorite of many knitters and spinners. Perhaps I should submit a question to his campaign…. (Not that any answer he might give would sway my vote. I do consider deeper issues than knit-friendliness when choosing a president.)

But that leads me to my mitts—the Delicato mitts. Finished just last night from ultra-soft Mongolian cashmere, they are a sensual delight on the hands. However, there does seem to be a slight problem.

The left mitt: well-fitting without being too snug, hugs my hand in comfort.

The right mitt: swallows my pinky finger and most of my hand. Drowns my hand in a sea of raspberry cashmere. Oops.

This is a result of being too slavish to the pattern and not taking into consideration my own particular measurements. This pattern was designed for an average size hand. My hands are small. I realized my mistake after knitting the first mitt, so I shortened the pattern considerably so that the second mitt could cover my palm but not swallow my fingers. I also shortened the thumb by a few rows so that I have a full range of movement while wearing the mitt. (Since I edit for a living, my fingers fly at the keyboard all day.)

Anyway, this is a lesson to me—after 30+ years of knitting!—never to just assume that the pattern will work for me. Woodworkers say “measure twice, cut once.” I should be saying, “Measure twice, knit once. Oh, and try the damn thing on before it’s done so you can make changes while you go, silly!”

You’re never too old to learn.

Now, to frog the ends of the right mitt to make it match the one that actually fits…

  1. Those are beautiful! I’ve been thinking about fingerless mitts a lot lately with this really cold snap we’ve had. The color and pattern are wonderful!

  2. Doncha hate it when that happens? The well-fitting one looks absolutely gorgeous on your hand, though, so it’ll be worth the visit to the frog pond! I love that pattern, and I’ve been trying to decide whether to buy it, but then Anne just came out with the zigzag mitts and I was lost. They’re next in the queue 🙂 Let me know what Mitt Romney replies!

  3. Those mitts are lovely.

As a side note, for some reason your side bar overlaps your blog pane on my browser. I’m using IE 6.0.29. I don’t know why that is. 😦
